The ferries are the last of five vessels of the E-Flexer series that Stena Line ordered from sister company Stena RoRo. They are being built at the CMI Jinling Weihai Shipyard in China. Of the first three vessels, the first two — Stena Estrid and Stena Edda — have already entered service on the Irish Sea earlier this year. KfW IPEX-Bank and the Swedish-based international shipping company Stena have signed a loan agreement of USD 180 million to finance two new E-Flexer RoPax ferries. The ships, which are designed to carry flexible “rolling” (Ro) cargo such as trucks and trailers, as well as passengers (Pax), are among nine new vessels ordered by Stena from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai). Stena Embla is the third of five new E-Flexer roll-on / roll-off passenger (RoPax) vessels being built at the shipyard. It is also the last of three new vessels due for the Irish Sea, marking the end of a seven-year development programme with a total investment of £400m on new ferries and port infrastructure in the region.
